DODDINGTON, NEWNHAM & WYCHLING NEWSLETTER

SEPTEMBER 2002

Parsonage Farmhouse,39, The Street.Newnham. September 2002

After nearly five years among us Roy and Myrtle feel called to a new ministry in Northern France. Their lives have touched our communities in so many ways: our lives have been broadened and enriched, new friendships and relationships forged. I believe the Kingdom of God has been brought closet and experienced in their loving kindness and generous hospitality. We have made our farewells, or perhaps, our'au revoirs'? Now it is time to look forward and try to discern what God has in store for us in the future.

At this time of year many will be beginning new chapters in their lives. Young children off to school for the first time, others who are older beginning at secondary school, and yet others who will be starting work or going off to college or university. These changes are part of the ongoing journey of life which all of us are called to. Sometimes we fmd the journey exhilarating and exciting,.sometimes featureless, pointless and mundane, sometimes almost unbearably sad and painful. Perhaps we might wish that life would just stand still with familiar relationships and old certainties wrapped around us warding off the risky and the new?

One of the most requested hymns at both weddings and funerals is 'The Lord of the Dance~. 'The 'dance! is our journey through life and death to LIFE in all it's fullness. Dancing by yourself is not nitich fun! Jesus calls us into this dance, his arms held out to us, his eyes meeting ours, his leading us forward, beckoning us to follow in his footsteps. Dancing classes take place each Sunday. We are all learners! Why not come and join in? Sincerely, Diana.

Roy and Myrtle's new address is: Villa Le Redain, 56, rue Alexandre Guilmant, 62164 Andresselles. France.

During the vacancy,if you have any queries about church matters, please contact your church wardens or myself. Please look at the new schedule of services as there are some changes to the previous pattern eg AU 8am Holy Communion (BCP )services will now be held at 9am! Doddington Parish Council
Summary of meeting held 12th August 2002. Report by Alistair Clinton
6 Parish Councillors present + 8 members of the public including C11r Prescott of Swale Borough Council

FLOODING Councillor Woodhouse advised Swale Borough Council (SBC) has been kerbing lagoons and clearing drainage gullies, and an engineer has been on site within the Parish examining causes of the recent tlooding and possible remedial action. The engineer has advised the basic problem is the diameter of existing drainage pipes through the village is inadequate for higher volumes of water being experienced. This can only be resolved by major work. Problems are compounded by gullies being blocked by debris. The engineer suggested high kerbing on Sprats Hill to reduce the debris carried down and blocking gullies. It would entail widening the road by approximately 1V and reduce erosion by vehicles. The Parish Council was concerned that this would not be in keeping with the area and not actually reduce flooding and requested the engineer re-examine the problem. The Parish Council highly commended the efforts of the engineer for the Parish.
GATE TO PLAYING FIELD After talks with concerned parents regarding child safety the Parish Council decided not to reopen the side gate until self closing springs can be installed.
PUBLIC DISCUSSION TIME - Members of the public commented that traffic speeding through the village added to flood problems by the wake of vehicles. That motorists often ignored pedestrians indicating for traffic to slow down to try and prevent wash.
PARISH COUNCIL AUDITED ACCOUNTS Are available for inspection at the Butchers from 22nd August until O'b September 2002~

PLANNING MATTERS
Down Court Farm
- Grain store ancillary storage additional information received that the traffic impact should not he significant, as larger storage will reduce the frequency of movement requirements.
Stuppington Kennels
- Recent fencing is not subject to planning legislation as falls outside height requirements. Plans for bungalow (replacing previous building) were viewed. The council voiced concerns at retrospective planning applications. Fresbrields, Duly Rill Conversion of garage to sitting room, new detached garage. Councillors Woodhouse and Clinton declared an interest in this matter (being neighbours) and could not vote.. The Parish Council decided to request a site meeting. 2 Solomons Cottages Two storey side extension - No objection

DODDINGTON CROSS COUNTRY - SITTINGBOURNE STRIDERS (DODDINGTON BRANCH) On the 6' August starting from and more importantly, finishing at the Chequers PH, the cross country route took participants on an 8.5km route along country lanes, through woods and over grassland. A shorter 6km route was arranged for junior members and some of the Striders who were not up to it. The event was given added spice by the presence of that well known Doddington personality Dr. Leadbelly. Actually he is not really a doctor although he is, to a certain extent, practising. The idea was that the Dr. would buy a lemonade for any runner who completed the race ahead of him. The Dr., due to a long term deficiency, is unable to run, so he would be completing the course on a bicycle. He would give the runners a 10 minute start, Sounds good! So on a sunlit summer evening , the Striders strode out havin3 been warned to watch out for the snakes in the grass and straw covered potholes full of mud. 10 minutes later the Dr. got his leg over the bike and, after a few problems trying to work out what gear levers did, off he wobbled. After eventually realising that he had his map upside down and inside out, the Dr. failed to spot a branch in a hedge and his glasses came tumbling off. A trip to the opticians was in order. A few minutes later - having not even passed the most sluggish of Striders - the good Dr. came to a halt. A puncture ! His quest was all over. Tail between. his legs he retreated to the Chequers to check on his tab and to wait for the returning Striders. As it turned out, the first 3 people home were all from Doddington - Geoff Potts finishing I" in 38.10 followed by Nigel England (38.30) then Steve Shrimplin (38.40). In fact Nigel showed all his local knowledge in being the only person amongst the 40 who took a wrong turn The junior event was won by Bruce Shrimplin in a time of 34.30. The Striders hope to arrange a larger scale event just after Christmas. Watch out for news and get those trainers cleaned up !! And has anybody seen Dr. Leadbelly ?

towards the feeding programme in Kasungu, IMMEDIATELY.

APPLES RIPEN FASTER IN DODDINGTON ORCHARD
Congratulations to a local fanner ............... Owing to the high temperatures across Kent, apples have ripened early this year. AR. Neaves and Sons of Little Shartsted, Doddington are one of the country's farmers who have won the annual race to produce the first English Discovery apples of the season, which are available at Tesco stores across Kent.

HOT AIR & BALLOONS
On 15th
August a hot sultry evening, suddenly a cry went up from a garden in Sunnyside, Doddington: 'Come here quickly!', We hurried up the steps, just as there was a 'Whoosh' and a hot air balloon sailed gently overhead, just clipping the trees before landing rather bumpily in Colin Gazes field behind Sunnyside. First on the scene was Eddie, to check everyone was OK, as the basket had tipped over on to its side. All intact, though, a bit bemused but otherwise pleased to be safe. Oh ! well, back to relaxation mode, but it was exciting while it lasted

Thomas is a 7 yr old boy who lives in Doddington and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, this is a muscle wasting terminal illness with no cure or treatment. Most boys can live to 15yrs, sadly Thomas is unlikely to survie that long, as his illness is progressing at a faster speed than usual, he would love to swim with dolphins and so on October 6th Drew & Jayne (family friends ho live local to the village ) will be doing a tandem parachute jump at Headcorn airfield. We will be jumping from between 9000 & 12000 feet. Sponsor forms have been left at :

The Chequers Pub, The Garage, The George Pub & The Tapster Bar Bistro, or use the form below and return to Jayne at 4 Wineycock Newnham. If you would like to be one of those to help make a child's dream come true then please sponsor us.
