Spad Combat is aerial combat between simple, quickly-made, cheap radio models which are built to a formula.
Each model tows a 30 foot streamer and points are scored for each piece you cut off your opponent’s streamer as in control-line combat.
The model shown above is a popular choice called Saturday Night Midget. Mainly constructed from 2 and 4m/m Correx and square plastic drainpipe, it is tough, cheap, and easy to build.
Plans and build instructions can be found by visiting http://spadtothebone.com/freeplans.htm and related websites.
Engines are .15 size and must use an 8x3 prop., not exceeding 17,000rpm. The latest SC 15 is a popular choice with SADMAC members.
The Correx comes from “Sign Supplies” of Maidstone, and may be available at trade prices. The 61mm square plastic drainpipe is made by “Osma” and is sold by an outfit called “Wavin”.
It is, so I am told, advisable to use only the white variety. Servo of choice is the Corona small metal-geared servo. Again, use only the black ones, not the clear, as these are prone to easy breakage.
Fuel tank is 4oz. and SADMAC have been using an item from Colin Buckle with a round neck (maybe a Cougar or Mini Hype tank would be OK?) Mainspar is from 22 x 6mm light hardwood (Spruce, Bass, Ramin or really hard Balsa?) The wing L/E and T/E reinforcement at the centre section needs to be extended by 1” either side to prevent rubber band damage on “heavy landings” (crashes!!) I guess it may be possible to batch-purchase engines and tanks and Correx if enough people are interested. This sounds like great fun but can only get under way if enough people give it a try, so please have a butchers at the website and let me know what you think via email or the MMFC forum.
Thanks for looking - more info as I get it . Happy Landings - Geoff.
