March Update

Our aim:- ·
By the end of 2002 confirm that Swale Highways has money budgeted for traffic calming measures in Doddington. ·

By the end of 2003 have long term effective traffic calming measures in place in Doddington that have been agreed in consultation with residents & that complement rather than detract from the rural environment. ·

To support landowners, local residents & the AONB in the environmental enhancement of the C258 which will reduce the speed of rural traffic.

What we've done so far:- · Looked at what can be done to enhance the rural aspect of the road. · Looked at the risk points right through the village · Looked at what traffic calming measures could be used - lots are very ugly & only suitable for towns & some need street lights - but there are some other suitable measures which we could have. · Succeeded in having the stretch of the road from Doddington to Lenham white lined to improve safety and by visually narrowing the road hopefully encourage speed reduction and discourage heavy traffic (it'll also help when its foggy up there!).

What we're going to do:- · Get Swale highways to come & talk to us, get specialist knowledge on what will & won't work. · Consult EVERYone in the village when we've got a draft scheme agreed. · Campaign for the funds to get the scheme implemented!

In the meantime…… · We've nagged for some speed checks - there have been NINE done since we asked! 27 drivers have been charged with speeding offences 42 drivers have been cautioned for speeding offences SO watch out - don't be the next person to be caught !!! There are going to be more checks………

Drive slowly in your own village & the rat-runners trying to tear through behind you HAVE to slow down. Remember - it's our village, it's our children, it's our safety. If you want more info - look at our page on the Doddington website: www.doddington-kent.org.uk

WHATS HAPPENING?

A question I am sure many people are asking. Well the last meeting of the combined Doddington and Newnham Traffic Calming Group took place on Tuesday 25th September last year. Sadly only six members of the group attended the meeting including three of the original eight members from Doddington.

While Doddington residents involved in the group remain committed to pursuing the issue of traffic calming in the village, (which had been identified as the village's No1 priority in the Parish Council's survey 2000/2001), it was felt that due to differences in perception emerging between the two main villages it would be more effective for the two villages to work independently.

The Doddington team subsequently met in January to discuss the future of the group and it was unanimously decided that it would be more effective for Doddington residents to pursue this issue separately from Newnham Parish Council. The Doddington team would like to wish members from Newnham every success in resolving Newnham's traffic calming issues in the future.
